CPCS was created in 2003 to meet the need to provide a competence scheme for plant operators within the construction industry and allied sectors. CPCS provides assurance of core skills and knowledge relating to a specific type of plant through a comprehensive testing process. Competence is then recognised through the achievement of national and Scottish qualifications. It is a requirement of the scheme that operators must renew their Competence Operator (Blue) card.

The test can be taken at any existing centres that offer the HS&E test, including the Pearson VUE Test Centres and other approved Internet Test Centres (ITCs), many of which are CPCS Test Centres. If the card- holder is renewing more than five categories, they need to book an additional test. The modules can be taken within one sitting or split and taken at different times of the day. The HS&E test can be booked at the same time, allowing both tests to be undertaken in one sitting at the test centre.

6. How do I know which modules to book?

A renewal reminder is sent to all Blue cardholders six months before the expiry date. Most categories have a corresponding module and will be shown on the website booking page. In some cases, similar categories will only have one module, for example, Dump Truck – Articulated Chassis and Dump Truck – Rigid Chassis have one module entitled ‘Dump Truck’, which applies to both categories.

8. What happens if I do not pass the renewal test?

If modules are not passed within a renewal test, the test must be re-booked at a later date. A new test fee will be charged. Any passed modules do not need to be retaken.
